According to Michael J. Karter, Jr. of the National Fire Protection Association, the United States has a severe fire
dilemma that is more so than what is generally perceived. Nationally, there are millions of fires, thousands of deaths, tens of thousands of injuries, and
billions of dollars lost - which makes the U.S. fire problem one of great national importance.
In 2007 there were 1,557,500 fires in the United States. Positively there was a 5.2% decrease in the number of
fires in 2006. In 2007 17,675 burn injuries occurred. Fourteen thousand of those injuries occurred at residential fires. Nationwide every thirty seconds a burn injury occurs in the
United States. Seventy-Eight percent of the structural fires occurred in residential properties. Compared to the prior years statistics, there was a 1.2% increase in structural fires.
On the positive side, the fires relating to outdoor properties decreased by 8.5% and vehicle related fires decreased by 7.2% compared to 2006. According to the 2007 statistics,
every twenty seconds a fire department in the United States responds to a fire. A structural fire occurs in the United States of America at the rate of one fire every fifty-nine seconds.
Every seventy-six seconds a fire department is called to respond to a fire at a residential address. Fires occur in vehicles at the rate of one vehicle every one hundred and twenty-two seconds.
Finally it has been found that every forty-one seconds there is an outdoor property fire. To find out more about the United States National fires, deaths and injuries statistics go to

Since BSTTW is an international
non profit organization, we must look at the situation not only in the USA but around the world. The BSTTW Board of Directors asks you
to take a moment and think about how many people from around the world die or are injured daily due to home fires. The statistics are higher than we can imagine. There are millions of fires each year in every part of the world.
Some of the areas around the world do not have a burn unit, the medical staff and medical equipment needed to help a burn victim recover and become a burn survivor. It has been shown
that children and the elderly are especially at risk in home fires. This is due to the fact that our children and the elderly are less able to escape a fire. We
can improve the chances that our family will survive a home fire by installing smoke alarms and practicing fire safety and how to exit when the alarm
sounds. With your support, BSTTW can continue to donate the finances, medical equipment, advocacy, support and fire safety information needed to
prevent fires and rebuild the lives of the people who suffer a burn injury and their family members.
BSTTW offers membership, a peer support team,
education, advocacy, medical referrals, a free medical treatment program,
medical equipment, legal referrals, healing weekends, public awareness for the
burn survivor community and the public world wide.
On the internet
BSTTW offers a support team, email
